Assessing the need for an internal audit function
Many organisations of a certain size assume that they require internal audit without defining what they want it to achieve.
I worked with a large national charity with income over £30m to initially assess the need for internal audit and then to consider the most appropriate way to resource it. It was established that an outsourced function would provide the most effective outcomes as the risks to be addressed were specialist in nature and recruiting for an inhouse role would not provide the level of expertise and experience required. I then worked with the senior leadership team in the beauty parade including joining the panel providing support and insight into the process.
